Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center gets approved as a Doing Good recipient
Friday, November 20th, 2009Memorial Elementary gets approved as a Doing Good recipient
Friday, November 20th, 2009Applicant: Christy
Approval date: 11/20/2009
About the organization:
We are a low-income school in the Dallas, TX area. Many of our parents work two or more jobs to make ends meet so bringing parents into school is a challenge. We work hard to provide basic needs as well as school supplies and an angel tree near the holidays. We have a math night coming up in a few weeks where we encourage families to come and have fun with their children doing math activities- our theme this year is Amazing Math Race! The $100 gift card would be a fabulous way for us to help fund this event for our families. We would like to auction the canvas print to our staff so that we can purchase some door prizes that support math and measurement as a family (ex. measuring cups and gingerbread cookie mix).

Canvas on Demand Supports the Arlington Children’s Theatre
Sunday, November 8th, 2009Canvas on Demand is committed to supporting grassroots non-profits across America. Here is an organization that recently requested a $100 gift card from us to be used for fundraising. We enjoyed reading about their mission of bringing the arts to children and their families, and we hope to get some photos from them to post to our site so all our readers can learn more about them. Here’s what they told us about their efforts:
Established in 1991, Arlington Children’s Theatre is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating positive theatrical experiences for children aged 4 through 18 from nearly twenty Boston area communities. ACT is an all-volunteer organization, made up of families who wish to have fun and work hard to bring theatre to life. We hire theatre professionals to teach our workshops and direct our shows. Each show relies on the participation of adult volunteers involved in every aspect of the production: lighting, costumes, make-up, set construction, set crew, etc. Participation in an ACT production is open to any child, from any town. With so many financial cuts in the public schools these days, ACT fills a gaping need for performing arts for many area children. We hope you’ll consider donating to this worthy cause.
Keep up the great work, ACT. We are proud of you for Doing Good! Mom
Hillside Health Care International
Monday, September 28th, 2009
A medical volunteer examines a young Mayan girl.
On the evening of October 8th, I will have the honor of being the keynote speaker at the TenYear Anniversary Celebration of Hillside Healthcare International. The event will be held at the Milwaukee Zoo, and the theme is OUR CELEBRATION; OUR STORIES; OUR FUTURE. Hillside provides free healthcare to the poor and under-served.
All proceeds from this event will help support Hillside’s mission: Hillside Health Care International is a faith based, non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing health care and disease prevention. HHCI is devoted to helping to improve quality of life through medical care, health education, and community outreach. HHCI promotes healthy global attitudes by offering a culturally-rich educational program for medical volunteers and students, which challenges them to better understand their role in international health care.
Thanks Canvas on Demand for supporting this event! Mom
Mom Thanks Jim and Ruth Turner
Monday, September 7th, 2009While I was in Estes Park during my Canvas Across America tour, I met Jim and Ruth Turner, the owners of the Estes Park KOA. On behalf of Canvas on Demand, I thanked them for their work with the KOA Care Camps–camps for children with cancer. I presented the Tuckers with two items–a Thanks for Doing Good Kit, which includes a $100 gift certificate, and a lovely 3-panel Great Big Canvas of snow covered mountain pines such as those enjoyed by Colorado visitors in the winter. Jim and Ruth will deliver both gifts to the KOA National Conference in November.
Thanks again, Jim and Ruth, for making a positive change in the world for children who are struggling with cancer.

Supporting School Children in a Remote Village
Tuesday, August 4th, 2009From CFI Missions Coordinator, Lisa Sapp:
On behalf of the Cornelius Foundation International—a faith-based educational organization that serves students, teachers, and parents in under-resourced areas—I want to thank you for donating a $100 gift certificate which we auctioned off at our annual fundraiser. The money raised will help support children in a small Belizean village school.
I thought your visitors might delight in this short video of these children in the school yard enjoying the rainy season. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
Helping Kids Fight the Odds–In and Out of the Boxing Ring
Friday, July 31st, 2009Darryl and Deatha Kirkland have lots of compassion for kids who are fighting the odds. They both came from working poor families and many times found themselves struggling to make ends meet. They can remember what it was like growing up poor with few options for families with children.
And even today, they recall what it’s like for families who can barely pay the rent and keep the lights on, let alone find money for meaningful entertainment for their children. “Darryl and I could find few family activities that were affordable for our own children, and we understand that other families are experiencing the same thing. That’s why we decided to start a nonprofit to provide our local children with more options without money being a barrier.”
But after launching the non-profit, they soon learned that children are hungry for more than just something to do; they desire to be validated and valued. “They want to feel that someone believes that they are important. We provide programs…but we also provide so much more.” Darryl and Deatha look at themselves as builders, builders of hope and self-esteem. Indeed, they are restoring faith in children who only need someone to provide them with some opportunities and the gift of time.
The non-profit organization they created is in Selma, North Carolina, and is called LAMiTCA. Their mission is to help the working class poor achieve the American Dream. This goal is achieved through a mentoring outreach, educational efforts, and a resource center.
Deatha explains that their objective is to empower local youth through classes that enhance their social and academic skills—skills that will help them become productive adult citizens. “Our resource center includes information ranging from job search to environmental awareness, and our classes include English as a second language, boxing, ballet and modern dance, tutoring, and GED instruction.” The Kirklands never stop dreaming. “We don’t have our own building yet. That’s our big goal, to someday have a facility of our own.”
Canvas on Demand learned about LAMiTCA when Darryl sent an email: I love canvases too…but for a TOTALLY different reason. I run a nonprofit for poor and at-risk youth 8 to 20 years old, and we are building a boxing ring. I need a canvas that will cover an 18’×18’ ring. Would you be willing to donate something like that to our cause?
Canvas on Demand co-owners, Tom and Joe, checked out their website at www.lamitca.com to learn more and jumped right onboard. Tom said, “Once we learned how this couple is empowering kids in their local community, we wanted to support them. Since our canvas prints are not meant for this sort of application, Joe and I decided to order what they needed from Everlast. We are delighted to partner with LAMiTCA by making this donation. We want others to know about the fine work that Darryl and Deatha are doing in Selma. Their efforts, aimed at bringing about positive change in our world, sets a terrific example for others.”
Working Together to Crop Out Juvenile Diabetes
Monday, July 13th, 2009
Riley and her mom, Jill: “Thanks Canvas on Demand for the $100 gift certificate that we auctioned off during our silent auction. You are helping us make a difference.”
Canvas on Demand is a proud partner of this event. Together we are working to find a cure for children like Riley! Joe Schmidt, co-owner
Sarah Howell, a Creative Memories Consultant who has been scrapbooking since 1998, says this event all began with a simple email from her friend, Jill McCarthy.
At four-years-old, Jill’s daughter, Riley, was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes. Soon Sarah, Jill, and many others were working together to launch a scrapbooking event in Nashville, Tennessee, that would raise money for a great cause. Sarah explains, “We are so proud of Riley, and we simply wanted to do this to support her and to help find a cure for all the children with Juvenile Diabetes. We want to give them hope for their future.”
